Everything You Need To Know About Pedestrian Crossing Markings

In the UK, pedestrian markings are an extremely recognisable part of our built landscape. Distinctive, widespread and utterly essential, they have been a key measure in keeping pedestrians – not to mention cyclists and equestrians – safe for the better part of eight decades.

In this guide, we’ll explore the purpose of pedestrian crossing markings, where they’re used, the materials involved, and why proper pedestrian line marking remains such an important part of modern road safety.

 

Keeping Pedestrians Safe on the Road

The primary purpose of pedestrian crossing markings is simple: to provide a clear, visible, and predictable place for people to cross safely. While in the UK we don’t enforce penalties for “jay walking” (crossing the road outside of permitted areas), using crossing spaces creates a better road environment for both pedestrians and drivers, ensuring safety and predictability which keeps everyone moving smoothly.

Decades of road safety research have consistently shown that clearly marked pedestrian crossings encourage safer crossing behaviour and improve driver awareness of vulnerable road users. There are several kinds of crossing in the UK – which are all rather whimsically named – and they include:

Zebra Crossings: Zebra crossings feature alternate black and white stripes and two amber belisha beacons – named after Leslie Hore-Belisha, the Minister of Transport who introduced them – and are one of the older types of crossing in the UK. Like all crossings, they are preceded by zig-zag lines to prevent drivers parking close by and affecting visibility, and generally, pedestrians have right of the way – meaning that cars should stop allow a person to cross, and that person proceed when all vehicles are stationary and it is safe to do so.

Perhaps the most famous example of a Zebra crossing is the subject of the iconic cover art of the Beatle’s “Abbey Road”, which is still visited and photographed by thousands of tourists every year.

Pelican Crossing: An evolution of the Zebra crossing, Pelican crossings are light controlled and feature a push button and a screen with a green/red man signal. Rather than giving pedestrians automatic priority, they push the button to show their presence and sensors will turn traffic lights red to allow them to pass.

It also has a flashing amber phase for drivers, meaning they must give way to pedestrians already on the crossing but can proceed if it’s clear.

Puffin Crossing: Standing for “Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent” Puffin crossings are smarter than pelican crossings, and are slowly replacing their older brother across the UK. Puffins use sensors to understand when pedestrians are still crossing the road and hold the lights accordingly, with no flashing amber phase.

Toucan Crossing: So called because “two can” cross, Toucan crossings are designed for both pedestrians and cyclists. Wider than other crossings, with a green bike symbol alongside the green man, cyclists are permitted to ride across rather than dismounting.

Pegasus Crossing: One of the rarer UK examples, Pegasus or equestrian crossings are usually found on the intersection of roads and bridleways and are used for pedestrians and horseriders. They have a higher push button (reachable from horseback) and sometimes a separate signal for riders.

Tiger Crossing: A relatively newer type, this is essentially a Zebra crossing that also includes a marked cycle lane across the road. The striped section has yellow stripes added to indicate cyclists mat cross too.

 

The History of Pedestrian Crossing Markings

The first pedestrian crossing signal was installed in 1868 in London to allow pedestrians, especially Members of Parliament in a rush to vote, to cross Bridge Street and reach the Houses of Parliament. It was the brainchild of John Peake Knight, railway engineer, who is also credited with the invention of the traffic light. After a gas leak from the crossing’s  lamp caused an explosion which injured a police officer, it would be a long time before another formalised crossing was implemented in the UK.

As vehicle ownership increased throughout the early twentieth century and roads got busier, the need for dedicated pedestrian crossing points became increasingly apparent. Public interest in the subject is clear in letters to contemporary newspapers, and in 1949, the Ministry of Transport implemented around a thousand experimental crossings during “Pedestrian Safety Week”. Following this, in 1951, the first official Zebra crossing was marked in Slough.

With analysis demonstrating the success of using designated crossing spaces, various forms can now be found worldwide – from the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing in Tokyo (which carries an estimated 1,00 t 2,500 people every two minutes) to Times Square in New York, pedestrian crossing have become a universal feature of modern urban life.

 

Where You’ll Find Pedestrian Crossing Markings

Of course, we are most likely to associate pedestrian crossing markings with public roads, where they help people on foot, bike and horse to navigate busy traffic routes. They are particularly useful where large numbers of vulnerable road users congregate – such as school (where they may be accompanied by a Lollypop Lady/Man to ensure small children stay safe), hospitals and public parks.

However, it’s also important to remember that in many workplace environments, pedestrian line marking is just as important as road-based crossings. Warehouses, logistics hubs, airports and manufacturing facilities often contain a mix of pedestrians, forklifts, HGVs, and other moving vehicles. Clearly marked walkways and crossing points help separate traffic flows and improve overall site safety.

Spaces such as large retail parks and car parks (particularly in complex areas such as hospitals) can present unique challenges due to manoeuvring, a large range of vehicle types and high pedestrian activity. Pedestrian crossing markings help organise traffic and improve visibility for drivers, which means everyone can move around these areas with ease.

Thermoplastic remains one of the most widely used materials for pedestrian crossing road markings throughout the UK. Applied in a molten state, thermoplastic bonds securely to the road surface and provides:

High-friction surfacing has played a significant role in reducing road accidents since its introduction and remains and important safety measure on approaches to crossings and junctions.
