We have been sought out in support one of Ringways very own, Jay Kirtley, as he will be running, for the first time, the London Marathon for 2027. Whilst we can speak on his story, I thought it would be better to share his.
“Running the London Marathon has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. I’ve spent the last 10 years stupidly entering the ballot every year thinking I’d never actually get a place, so I was absolutely shocked (and very grateful) to finally be offered a spot in the 2027 London Marathon.
This will be my first marathon and by far the biggest challenge I have ever taken on, both physically and mentally. I’m looking forward to pushing myself and seeing what I’m capable of over the months of training ahead.
I am incredibly proud to be running on behalf of the Royal British Legion, a charity that supports serving personnel, veterans and their families.
My dad served in the British Army for 23 years with the Scots Guards, including tours of duty in the Falklands, Iraq, and Northern Ireland. Growing up with that background gave me a real understanding of the dedication, resilience and sacrifice involved in military life, and it means a great deal to me to be able to support the Armed Forces community through this challenge.
My fundraising target is £2,500, which is split into two stages: £1,250 to be raised by December this year, and the remaining £1,250 after the marathon in April. I’ll be starting my fundraising early so I can build momentum and give myself the best chance of reaching the target.
I will also be documenting my training journey along the way, with the help of my wife Kerry, who is far better than me at posting updates on social media, and sharing progress as I prepare for race day.
If you’re a runner yourself, I’d really appreciate any advice—training, nutrition, mindset, or anything you wish you’d known before your first marathon.
Every donation, no matter the size, will make a real difference and will help motivate me through the long training runs ahead. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for any support you’re able to give”.
