Another great initiative brought to us, and something I’ve never done before.
Balfour Beatty living places invited Hi-Way Services to join them on their volunteer day with The Felix Project to go fruit picking!
Despite the rainy start to the day (which didn’t stop us), we helped collect pears that will go towards fighting hunger, cutting food waste, and protecting the environment.
Who is Felix?
Felix was a young boy who tragically passed away from meningitis in 2014. He was full of compassion for those less fortunate. One of his standout memories was playing in a boys’ football tournament and noticing that some of the 10-year-old boys on the opposing teams hadn’t eaten anything that day. In his honour, the charity was created to continue his legacy of kindness and care.
What is The Felix Project?
The Felix Project is London’s largest food redistribution charity. They rescue high-quality food that would otherwise go to waste and redistribute it to over 1,200 community organisations across the capital.
Did you know? 1 in 4 working families in London regularly struggle to feed their children, an estimated 325,000 families.
What Do they Do?
The Felix Project collects good, surplus food from the food industry that cannot be sold and would otherwise go to waste. This food is delivered to food banks, charities, primary schools, and holiday programmes across London.
Most of the rescued food is fresh fruit and vegetables, high in quality and nutrition. They work with hundreds of suppliers—including supermarkets, wholesalers, farms, and restaurants—to reach vulnerable children and families, the homeless, the elderly, and anyone who cannot afford regular healthy food.
Their Impact
Last year alone, The Felix Project distributed the equivalent of 38 million meals to over 1,200 community organisations and schools across every London borough. Notably, 50% of the rescued food goes to organisations in the five most deprived areas of the capital.
