Recently, one of our customers reached out with an issue: their pre-formed thermoplastic lines were chipping away not long after installation. After a quick chat, we were able to pinpoint the problem and give them some tips to make sure their next application goes smoothly.
Here’s a breakdown of what happened, the reasoning behind it, and the key steps to perfect your next thermoplastic line installation:
What was the problem?
- Thermoplastic lines were not adhering to the surface shortly after installation.
Why did it happen?
- The material wasn’t heated long enough, leading to poor adhesion to the surface.
Here’s a Step-by-Step Guide to Get the Best Results:
Prep the Surface
Ensure the area is clean and dry. Removing loose material, dust, grease, and moisture. Use a torch to heat the surface to remove any moisture ready for the pre-form.
Use a Primer (Optional)
Primer is not required on bitumen; but we do advise on other surfaces, (e.g. concrete, block paving etc). Apply our Tack Coat Primer (SWARCO PREFORMED Primer Spray) and allow it to dry before laying the thermoplastic. This step is optional but can improve adhesion.
Lay the Thermoplastic Markings
Place the Pre-Formed Markings with the reflective glass beaded side facing up, ensuring no gaps between pieces for a seamless finish.
Heat Evenly
Use a heat gun with at least three bar pressure or a propane gas torch and keep the torch 30cm above the material. Move the torch in a sweeping motion, never focusing on one spot. Overheating can burn the material, and underheating causes poor adhesion.
Watch for the Indicators
Signs of proper heating:
- The material melts and blends evenly, with no visibility where the seams join.
- The edges should melt onto the surface, creating a tapered edge.
- Light bubbling indicates the right temperature has been reached.
Allow to Cool
Once installed, let the material cool for 5–10 minutes (longer if it’s a hot day). Do Not use water to speed up curing—it could cause adhesion issues.
By following these simple steps, you’ll ensure your thermoplastic lines stay intact and last longer. If you need any more advice or have questions about our products, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always here to help!
